Healthcare professionals work in environments where exposure to vaccine-preventable diseases may occur through direct patient care, sharps injuries, blood or body-fluid contact, respiratory exposure, contaminated instruments, or laboratory materials. Appropriate vaccination can reduce occupational infection risk and help limit transmission to patients, coworkers, families, and communities. Recommendations are not identical for every worker; they depend on age, occupational duties, exposure risk, vaccination history, documented immunity, medical conditions, pregnancy, contraindications, precautions, and current public-health guidance.
This two-hour course reviews vaccination terminology, immune response, vaccine platforms, development and safety monitoring, occupational risk assessment, vaccine-specific considerations for nurses and dental health care personnel, communication about vaccine concerns, workplace programs, and population-level protection. The practice gap addressed is the use of outdated or overly broad vaccine information when current, role-specific assessment is required.
At the end of the course, the participants are expected to:
- Explain essential vaccination terminology, vaccine types, components, dosing principles, development, and safety monitoring.
- Differentiate vaccination considerations for nurses and dental professionals according to occupational duties, exposure risk, documented immunity, and individual factors.
- Evaluate benefits, expected reactions, adverse-event concerns, contraindications, precautions, and barriers to vaccine acceptance.
- Formulate an evidence-informed response to an occupational vaccination or exposure scenario using current guidance and institutional procedures.
