In this course, we are going to discuss nursing pharmacology practices in pain management, conscious sedation, and anesthesia. As procedures are increasingly done on an outpatient basis or at the doctor’s office, safety protocols are paramount to prevent adverse reactions when administering these types of medications.

The course will outline the indications of conscious sedation, analgesia, and anesthesia. Nursing considerations when administering these medications will also be discussed.

At the end of the course, the participants are expected to:

  1. Review medications that are regularly used for analgesia, anesthesia, and conscious sedation
  2. Outline different methods of medication administration
  3. Identify the different levels of sedation 
  4. Discuss nursing considerations and special assessment methods when administering these types of medications
  5. Assess actions, contraindications, and side effects of commonly used sedatives, analgesics, and anesthetics
  6. Learn interventions for emergencies that may arise from adverse reactions
